James Wan proves that a director can make two good films in the same year with Insidious: chapter 2 after the release of the brilliantly atmospheric and sublimely creepy the conjuring.Insidious 2 (I will shorten it to this for the sake of convenience), takes place directly after the events of the first films opening with a flashback and finally Rose Byrne who plays the main characters mother, sitting in an interview room with a detective for the investigation of Lin Shayes death at the d of the first film. Which leads me to my main point; if you didn't like the first film, don't watch the second, but you wouldn't anyway so I digress.
Things begin to go strange again not long after the film has started and we are then treated to a very intense and very well directed 100 minutes that will keep you both on the edge of your seat and cowering into it. The direction with one of the appearances of the ghost about halfway through the film is masterful and so brilliantly shot that not a single person had anticipated it to happen that way.
The performances in this film are good for a horror movie, but Patrick Wilsons performance was much better in the Conjuring than it was here as sometimes he can just seem over the top and a bit silly at times, but other than that I wouldn't expect any Oscars but I wouldn't expect any Razzies either.
There's not really much else I can say about this other than it really surprised me how much I liked this film, and would happily sit through it again.
7/10
