Summer 2013 review- As well as expected

This list contains the films that did well for what they were, or those that did as well as people expected.

Monsters University

imgres.jpgPixars latest movie saw the characters from the much beloved monsters inc in their youth attending university. This may seem like a typical university/college movie plot thats been recycled time and time again, but with pixars unique way of storytelling and indisputable charm, Monsters Uni seems like a breath of fresh air. This is a great return to form after their last few films have not exactly equalled the quality of the originals.

The pixar team had their eye on reaching past the £1 billion mark, but due to other films such as despicable me 2, this charming tale has reached just under £700 million, this was what they hoped would be their second £1 billion grossing movie after toy story 3.

Pacific Rim
imgres.jpgGuillermo Del Toro's new adventure was a feast for the eyes and an adrenaline fuelled action movie seeing what is basically Transformers vs Godzilla turned up to 11. The lead played by Charlie Hunnam (sons of anarchy) was a troubled man who decided to quit fighting after his brothers death. the film contains a lot of clever gimmicks and does what Michael Bays movies never could; make everything seem big. the scale of this film is huge, and doesn't try to use this to fetishise the effects other than to show allow the audience to sit in awe as they view a spectacle of a film never seen before.

in terms of box office reports, the film had made around £100 million in the US and is set to finish with a total gross worldwide of around £400 million worldwide, which is around double the production value of the film, giving it a nice profit margin for the now unlikely sequel.

The Wolverine
imgres.jpgWhat is possibly the darkest x-men film ever made or to be made sees everyones favourite mutant travelling to Japan to say his final goodbyes to a friend who he saved during world war 2. Obviously, everything doesn't go to plan and causes Logan to go on the run with a woman who could become the most powerful woman in the country.

With a great first and second act, it is only the last half hour of the film what really lets this film down as it falls into a predictable and overly cartoonish formula just to prove itself as a comic book movie. It's total gross so far is around £300 million worldwide, which is a good profit for a comic book movie and the revenue has nothing to do but go up.

Star Trek Into Darkness
imgres.jpgJ.J Abrams has proved that he is officially the go to man to make a good sci-fi movie, with the star trek films, super 8 and the upcoming star wars movies to be added to his already impressive list of films. The second star trek movie is basically a reboot of (Spoiler alert) wrath of khan as we see the crew of the u.s.s enterprise face their most menacing villain yet; Khan, who is played with great skill by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

The 2009 movie made around £400 million at the box office making a good profit, but nothing phenomenal and is slightly less than expected given the reputation of the franchise. This was the same with into darkness as it made a little more than the first film, but this is still a little less than was expected from the sequel to the best star trek movie to date.
